See, the hardest thing for me was losing the Trestle. (Pause) I still love the Trestle. (Pause) We were treated like kings. (Pause) We had it all, just for the asking. Our brothers, sons, buddies — everybody rode along. (Pause) We had coolers stashed with beers on shore. We had Crown poured four fingers high before sunrise. (Pause) Anything we wanted was a walk away. Camp sites, the dibs to a dozen spots under the apple trees. We’d blow a paycheck on pork over a weekend and then drag fish for miles through leaves and dead salmon. (Pause) Didn’t matter. (Pause) It didn’t mean anything. (Pause) When we lost a fish, we’d just hook another. (Pause) We ran everything. (Pause) We had our spots. We had our holes. Everybody had their hands in the cooler. Everything was for the taking. And now it’s all over. (Pause) And that’s the hardest part. Today, everything is different. (Pause) There’s no Trestle. (Pause) My rock is gone. (Pause) My hole is filled in. (Pause) We fish the bend like everyone else. (Pause) I have to wait around like everyone else. (Pause) Can’t even get decent help. (Pause) Right after I got here I asked someone to clean the potatoes and I got dirty spuds. I’m an average nobody. I get to the hole late. I snag leaves. I listen to Mark talk about how it used to be. (Pause) I get to spend the rest of my life like a schnook.
